Al--Thanks. While this was beyond the scope of the piece, Stephen Douglas, who wrote the Kansas-Nebraska Act, ended up being despised by the southern Democrats, and was dead set against secession. In fact, at Lincoln's behest, he engaged in diplomacy with the border and northwest states. Ironically, he personally was against slavery (although his wife had slaves). In many ways--including his early death--he was a tragic figure.
