In light of the recent leak regarding Roe v Wade, we are reminded of the statement made by Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) on March 4, 2020, while arguments were being heard in the case of June Medical Services LLC v. Russo. As it happens, the case was decided on June 29, 2020, and the results pleased Schumer. But in March, this was very much in doubt.
Background: Louisiana's Unsafe Abortion Protection Act, requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, was found to be unconstitutional. The pro-abortion crowd viewed the admitting privilege requirement as an impediment for a woman to obtain an abortion.
The anti-abortion side viewed admitting privileges as a quality check on the provider. To absolutely no one’s surprise, Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the liberal majority.
But, as noted, in March, the outcome of this case was far from clear. Presumably, that is what inspired Schumer to attack the new conservative justices:
“From Louisiana, to Missouri, to Texas — Republican legislatures are waging war on women — all women. And they’re taking away fundamental rights. I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
“Releasing the whirlwind” is a corruption of the actual biblical passage (Hosea 8:7)
When they sow the wind,
they will reap the whirlwind;
The stalk of grain that forms no head
can yield no flour;
Even if it could,
strangers would swallow it.
The full book of Hosea describes the prophet’s love for his unfaithful wife Gomer, and the analogy is drawn between God’s love for His often sinful people. “Reaping the whirlwind” describes the consequences of relentless sin.
Thus, it was ironic that Schumer would substitute the supposed wrath of women desperate for abortions, with the wrath of God against sinners. But then, even the devil quotes scripture. (cf. Matthew 4:5-6)
Moreover, on that day, Schumer demonstrated that he and his ilk are functional Bolsheviks in that they recognize no opinion other than their own, and are quite willing to promote violence to achieve their ends.
While Schumer was roundly condemned for his remarks, which were followed by a non-apology-apology, Team R (with very few exceptions) missed a golden opportunity to take down this miserable senator.
